Most families are likely, not complete until they bring home the family pet. The animals that we choose to bring home and welcome as part of our families range from the common kitty and puppy to amphibians, birds, rodents, and even more specialty creatures and wildlife after obtaining certain permitting. No matter the type, the National Institute of Health (NIH) has been a partner in research to discover the physical and mental benefits of having a pet in the home. Research shows that not only do pets steal our hearts, but they also contribute to overall cardiovascular health by lowering cortisol, cholesterol, and blood pressure levels.

Recently, my own family added not one, but two puppies to our clan within a year. The advice I would offer to family, friends, and foes alike is the guidance to properly research your desired pet before taking the plunge. Pets require certain basic needs to be met daily and these needs range from pet to pet because of breed and size. There are certain pets more suited for families with small children and others that don’t require the daily scrutiny of walks and timely meals. Some pets need arrangements to go inside and out, and others need extra toys and security features to maintain their health while mostly indoors. Pets, like all living creatures, have health issues and need vitamins, sometimes medicine, proper diet, shots, and visit accessibility with a vet of your choice. Pets also cost money. Even the “Free Puppy” advertised on social media, in the grocery parking lot, or one claimed and adopted at the local shelter isn’t free. It is important to determine if this new expense is something you can handle.

There are so many ways that we celebrate our pets on this special day and others. Our family has thrown first birthday parties and dressed our puppies up for Halloween. We take our pets on family vacations and take pictures of all their important firsts. We love that they snuggle with us when we are sick, feeling blue, or just because they want to be near us. We love their excitement when we walk through the door. Pets can help provide your children with real-life opportunities in leadership by tending to the needs of your pets. While having a pet is a worthwhile pastime, it’s a serious decision. However, today’s the day; to show off your pets and celebrate National Pet Day!
